Evolution and Chance Works
2011-2017

From 2011 I drew from my background studying Human Evolution on the Human Sciences degree at UCL. This started with an interest in Johan Casper Lavater and Physiognomy. I was fascinated by the observational quality of Physiognomy and its tempting logic, despite its now recognised flaws.

This then developed into works addressing Memetics and Cultural Evolution Theory. Charecterised by simple colours and geometric elements that could be coded and mutated, then selected by the artist. This grew into an Arts Council of Wales funded project "Unnatural Selection" which investigated the role of the audience in this selection process, before finally proposing a fully digital version "Natural Selection" which would create (living) digital artworks that would adapt to their audience without the need for the artist.
