Artists Statement
I am a Visual Artist and engagement specialist with an interdisciplinary background. My work focuses on direct observation and measurement.
My practice is trying to get beyond painting as image construction to look at and highlight the whole process. This includes the reasons for making paintings, the significance of the subjects, the provenance of the materials used and the intended audience.
Recently this approach has been focused around observational painting, but has also included work in ceramics, film and working with specific communities. My recent work has involved making paints from local muds and burnt plant matter. Then using these to depict landscapes and the features in them from direct observation.
In addition to creating paintings and other artworks, this practice actively develops my understanding of Ecology, sustainability, Philosophy, growth, learning and creativity. This approach informs both my own work and my thoughts regarding Arts Education and workshops.
